What is Hand Surgery?

Hand surgery is the field of orthopedic surgery that deals with problems and pain of the hand, wrist and forearm. Hand surgeons and the hand surgical team are experts in diagnosing and caring for these problems with and without surgery.

Hands are uniquely specialized tools. They help perform so many of our daily activities. To do these tasks and activities, our hands require sensation, joint motion, tendon gliding, and muscle contraction. When an injury or a problem occurs, care must be given to all the different types of tissues that make function of the hand possible.

Hand Surgery at Atrius Health

Here at Atrius Health, our hand surgeons have additional specialty training in hand care. They devote their time to examining, treating, and studying the hand. Many conditions may benefit from non-surgical treatment options such as medication, splints, injections, or therapy. Sometimes hand surgeons may refer you to a hand therapist for treatment.

If you do require surgery, our hand surgeons can discuss the options available to you. Our hand surgeon can perform minor hand procedures at our Kenmore office. (For contact information, click "Locations" on the left.) The procedures are done under local anesthesia (unlike full sedation, which is done in the hospital), allowing a faster recovery time.
